KOLKATA- should wake up now

Kolkata is my own city. Lots of memory is attached with this city. I am now two years outside of the city, living in Mumbai. Mumbai is a city of dream, a speech of unuttered dreams. When I walk in the bright neon light of the city street and enjoy the surroundings, my conscious mind submerged into the glamour of the city but still my subconscious mind do miss & search something all the time. Yes, I miss my city, Kolkata all the time. I miss the vibes & bits of Kolkata.

Whenever I get time I escape from Mumbai, to go Kolkata. Here I find my own home, my family, & lovely delicious food. Kolkata is always special to me for another reason- my evergreen friendship group. The face of friendship which I saw in Bengal really couldn’t find somewhere else. Still in Kolkata when I am sad can put my head on my friend’s shoulder and can rub my running nose in their branded T-shirt, and yes, no fake attitude. That is really hard to find elsewhere. The big adda in rock with few cups (Made by mud) of tea at the whole evening, somewhat which you will not find somewhere except Kolkata. The festivity of Kolkata is the center attraction for me & obviously for the all India. The way we celebrate Durga puja, the way we celebrate Valentine day at the day of Saraswati pujo are really rare in somewhere else.

But the very true fact is my city of joy, is no more a city of joy. Once the city was the capital of India, tradition of business started from here. And now the City is running any way, from outside how it may seems, from inside it exhaling its last breadth. All new metropolitan cities ran ahead from this city, keep this city backward. All the time we only shouted for our tradition, culture & express ego on our intellectual brain. On those consequences we forget to ensure our progress on our economic development. We forget without arrangement of bread & butter only exercise of tradition & culture is a mere luxury. I can miss my city, but I have no way to come back here permanently. How I can come back here? No job is available here, to stay here means put full stop in own career. And starting business here is an uncanny dream, due to different political matter.

Kolkata now become a city of political anger. Everyday political death & nasty politics became its fate. No one is interested about what is the future of the city, how to come again in the race of development. One party in more than 34 years of kingdom totally changed the picture of democracy from this state. Another party which is coming now with lots of hope and speech is not a constructive one. What happened in Nandigram, only protest is not the answer. The government which doesn’t give chance to rice voice in democratic country should be fallen down from the chair immediately with the last strict punishment of a nation. What happened in Singur , as a citizen I can’t digest it. The case of Nandigarm & Singur may same in few areas, but we shouldn’t compare two incident. The blood of any person can’t compare with anything. When we started comparing, we started to dishonoring the greatest invention in the earth; origin of life.

What we saw in Singur is only a nasty political vote bank game. The group which is the backbone of Indian economic development, just thrown out due to the concern of economic fate of those people who owned the land is truly not digestible. We just showcased the emotion of those people which is attached with the land “ Maa Matir Manush”. But forget malnutrition is a big problem, & also forget the legend poetry of Sukanta “ purnimar Chand jeno jholsano ruti”. Couldn’t we ask for better packages which ensure a good economic development for affected poor people? Or this demand will not satisfy the political need? I see political problem in every state, in Mumbai also its present. But when it comes in the question of development, every political party works together. And here we can see the exact opposite.

In Mumbai, and other state I always hear Bengali are born intelligent, but which kind of intelligent is this where all intellectual brain came together to destroy their own state? Bengalis are always protesting strongly against any violation. What kind of protest we are watching now? All so called intellectuals are showing their face in media and doing debate between them, is the trend of protest now days here. Where we are going? What we are doing? When we will wake up again and start again screaming for justice??

  1. I really liked your article, and the first half of your article was really nostalgic... But, while coming to the secong half, i have a few qusetions. Like, is it a right thing to comment thabbt people in other states work together in a co-operative manner irrespective of their political bondages??? I do not really agree to the fact that the problem of Amlashol and those Hunger-related deaths happen in Bengal only. At the same time, what I saw is that the problem between Agriculture and Industry is not born in Singur only, but it came to our notice only after the Incidence. There are lots of economic literature on the topic which were in existence from a long ago...

But, Whatever I write, please don't think that I am in support of waht is happening in Bengal. The present political turmoil is really scary. Just a few days ago, a boy was murdered in the polittical scuffle, a boy was stoned in the eye in Ashutosh College, and lots of bad things are happening there. Even two years ago, what happened at Singur, I really don't support that...

Anyhow, I just hope that Kolkata and the whole country improves, and I want to end it by remembering what was told in Rang de Basanti,,, desh ko badalne se pehle khud ko badalna bahut zaroori hain...
